Music Challenge Days Twenty Six Through Thirty

And just like that, it’s over.

Day Twenty Six

  • What song makes you want to sing out loud?

There are so many songs I love singing in my car. But most of what I end up singing out loud is usually Fall Out Boy, so I’ll go with Young Volcanoes.

  • What is a song you can play on an instrument?

I can play three songs on my bass: Hedwig’s Theme from Harry PotterThe Addam’s Family theme song, and The Imperial March from Star Wars. I’m only kinda a nerd.

Day Twenty Seven

  • What is a song that makes you think of tragic love?

This is a song Rob turned me onto, but I think Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars is a good answer for this question.

  • What is your favorite TV show theme song?

I’ll Be There For You by The Rembrandts, the theme song to Friends.

Day Twenty Eight

  • What is a song you wish you could play?

I have wanted to learn how to play Dance, Dance by Fall Out Boy since I got my bass guitar.

  • What is a song you like with a color in the title?

Black by Pearl Jam was really the first song that came to mind. It’s a great song by a great band.

Day Twenty Nine

  • What is a song you like by an artist that is no longer living?

With David Bowie’s recent death, I’m gonna go with a song he was a part of. Specifically Under Pressure, especially since it’s a Queen song and Freddie Mercury is also dead.

  • What is a song that makes you think about life?

Drops of Jupiter by Train always just kinda makes me think about life and where mine is going. I’m not really sure why, but it does.

Day Thirty

  • What is a song that you like driving to?

I love driving to Devour by Shinedown, but if I do I have to set my cruise control because I’ll start speeding before I realize it.

  • What is your favorite instrumental only song?

Interlude by Attack Attack, because of memories with my friend, Sierra. Oh Spring break 2011.

Thank you for making this journey with me!

Music Challenge Days Twenty One through Twenty Five

The End is Near

Day Twenty One

  • What is a song that breaks your heart?

This song really only breaks my heart because of the subject matter of self harm and suicide. But it’s a beautiful song meant to give hope, which is why it’s so weird that it breaks my heart and made me cry the first time I heard it. The song is Missing You by All Time Low.

  • What is a song that makes you laugh?

There’s a lot of songs that make me laugh, but The Bad Touch by Bloodhoud Gang is always a good choice.

Day Twenty Two

  • What song gets stuck in your head the most?

Definitely This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race by Fall Out Boy. I love Fall Out Boy but jesus christ if this song doesn’t stay stuck in my head.

  • What is a song that reminds you of your favorite book?

I don’t really have a favorite book because I like too many of them, but I like to listen to Breaking Benjamin a lot when I’m reading, so I’m gonna go with Without You.

Day Twenty Three

  • What song reminds you of a happy moment in your life?

As with a lot of these questions, I have multiple answers. One would be Bottle And a Gun by Hollywood Undead, from the start of my friendship with Sierra. And the person in this memory will know exactly what I’m talking about when I say Wonderwall by Oasis.

  • What is a song that reminds your best friend of you?

I asked my friend Makare, since she has known me since I was two. Her answer was Weightless by All Time Low. She said the lyrics described me perfectly.

Day Twenty Four

  • What song reminds you of a sad moment in your life?

Give Me a Sign by Breaking Benjamin. I can barely listen to this song anymore.

  • What song would you consider your anthem?

I’m not sure honestly. I don’t really feel like I’m a very interesting person, so this is kinda hard. Probably Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots.

Day Twenty Five

  • What song would you like played at your wedding?

I know I already answered a question about what song(s) I would like to dance to at my wedding, but they differ from the song(s) I would like played in the ceremony, which is why I included this question. I have a few songs for this in mind, and one of them is probably Without You by Motley Crue.

  • What song reminds you of high school?

A Day To Remember’s song The Downfall Of Us All definitely got me through my senior year, so it’s probably the song that reminds me most of high school.

Music Challenge Days Sixteen Through Twenty

Five more days of music

Day Sixteen

  • What is a song you used to hate and now love?

Honestly, anything by Twenty One Pilots could fall into this category, but especially the song Tear In My Heart.

  • What is a song by your current favorite band?

I’m not even sure what my current favorite band is. I have a lot of love for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I have for a long time, so here’s their song Scar Tissue.

Day Seventeen

  • What is a song you hear often on the radio?

I listen to a mix of classic rock and modern rock stations mostly, and I hear Hells Bells by AC/DC a good bit. Fun fact: the bell tone intro is my text alert.

  • What is a song that you hope to dance to at your wedding?

I have a few of these actually. One that comes to mind currently is Better Together by Jack Johnson.

Day Eighteen

  • What is a song that you wish you heard on the radio?

Like, a song I like that doesn’t really come on the radio? Probably something by He Is We, like Prove You Wrong.

  • What is a song that you would play in your death scene if you were in a movie?

Probably something ironic like Don’t Fear the Reaper, but the cover by Gus.

Day Nineteen

  • What is a song from your favorite album?

I don’t really have a favorite album so that makes this question a bit hard. But one of my favorites is Awesome Mix Vol. 1, the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack so here’s two of my favorite songs from that: Hooked On A Feeling by Blue Swede and Come And Get Your Love by Redbone.

  • What is a song that was the anthem of your childhood?

Probably Follow Me by Uncle Kracker. I can’t tell you why me and my siblings and cousins loved this song, but we did. I kinda lost some of my childhood innocence when I realized the song was about two people having an affair. Either that, or All Star by Smash Mouth, thanks to the baby brother.

Day Twenty

  • What is a song from your favorite film?

I don’t really have a favorite film, but Dirty Dancing is one of my favorite movies and I’ll never get tired of watching it, so I’ll say (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes, the song from the last scene of the movie.

  • What song makes you want to rock out?

I have a lot of answers for this question, and one of them is The Pretender by Foo Fighters.

Beginning Yoga

So, as I mentioned before in this post, I’ve taken up doing yoga. It’s actually something I really enjoy, and it makes my body feel really good and relaxes me at the same time. And beginning yoga was not nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

I have really bad anxiety, and while yoga does help with calming me down a lot, I knew beginning yoga by joining a class would make me more nervous and stressed out than anything. So with a little bit of research and a trip to Walmart, I found a way to comfortably practice yoga in my own home. I’m no expert, but I do have a few tips for practicing yoga at home.

Tips for Yoga at Home

  • Make sure you have a large enough space to move around. It doesn’t have to be huge by any means, but you don’t want to feel cramped either. I just practice yoga in my living room, and find that I have enough space.
  • None of these items are necessary, but you may find doing yoga easier if you invest in them. These items are a yoga mat, yoga gloves, yoga socks, yoga blocks, and there are others as well. I currently only own a yoga mat, and I use my foot undeez from my dance class in place of socks. I also find that you can use pillows instead of blocks, but so far I haven’t done any routines that have required me to use either.
  • You can buy yoga DVDs at places like Walmart, but if you’re like me and of limited income, YouTube is a very good place to find yoga instructional videos. There’s quite a few out there, but the channel I’ve been using so far has been Yoga with Adriene. I love how relaxing her voice is, and how easy her instruction is to follow.
  • If you’re a beginner like I am, there is absolutely no shame in starting with easy videos, or not being able to nail a yoga pose right away. I have some residual flexibility from dance classes, but I’m nowhere near as flexible as I used to be, but I’m really trying not to let that bother me so I can improve.
  • Find a routine that suits you. I currently do not have a specific yoga schedule. I mostly just try to do it once a week, when no one else is in the living room. I put my baby iPad on the floor with me so I can see the videos better, and bring up iTunes on my computer and have it softly playing in the background. That suits me just fine, but some people might prefer the quiet between he instructor talking.
  • Stick with it! This is something I have to work on myself, but I’m already feeling the positive effects on my body. I’m trying to get my sister to do yoga with me; I bought her a mat and everything. I know I’ll be more motivated with a partner, and once I move out, Jenny and I are gonna have yoga nights. Your body will thank you for the work you put into it.

Thank you for reading!

Music Challenge Days Eleven Through Fifteen

Another day, more music

Day Eleven

  • For you, what song defines the 80’s?

Probably Livin’ On A Prayer by Bon Jovi, even though that isn’t my favorite Bon Jovi song by far. Either that, or Back In Black by AC/DC.

  • What song can you daydream to?

I daydream to a lot of songs. A song that really seems to induce daydreaming for me when I’m listening to it is Honeybee by Steam Powered Giraffe (thanks Rob).

Day Twelve

  • For you, what song defines the 90’s?

I think the song that probably defines the 90’s for me is Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. To me, that song just screams everything that the 90’s is.

  • What song did you discover via commercial?

I don’t remember where I first heard this song, but I keep hearing it on commercials, so I’m gonna go with Cake by the Ocean by DNCE. It’s just really catchy. Also Joe Jonas sings this song what the hell.

Day Thirteen

  • For you, what song defines the 00’s?

In Too Deep by Sum 41 really defines the 00’s for me. I’m not sure why, and 00’s me was really excited when I got to see them back in 2010.

  • What song describes the most important event in your life thus far?

Pomp and Circumstance, because so far, the most important event in my life has been graduating high school. Probably also because of the fantastic use of this song in the movie Kingsman: Secret Service.

Day Fourteen

  • What song makes you think of someone important to you?

There are so many people that are important to me in my life. Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine reminds me of someone very special to me.The lyrics are weird, and it would be hard for me to even begin to explain why this song reminds me of that person, but it makes so much sense in my head.

  • What is a song no one would expect you to love?

Probably I Don’t Like It, I Love It by Flo Rida. I’m dancing to this song this year in one of my classes and for some reason I don’t like it, I love it (I am so sorry).

Day Fifteen

  • What is a song you’ve heard live at a concert?

I’ve heard a lot of songs live, because I’ve seen quite a few of the bands I like. However, this version of I’ll Be There For You by Bon Jovi gave me chills. This is the video of the live performance I was at back in 2013. The video doesn’t do it justice, and the song is way better live.

  • What is a song you want the whole world to hear?

I wish I could say I  was really philosophical and #deep, but I am not. This is a question I thought long and hard about, and it’s so hard to answer. I’ve been listening to a lot of Green Day (thanks Rob), so Oh Love is coming to mind.

Why I’m in Love with Love: A Netflix Original Series

So, in roughly three days, I managed to watch the entire first season of Love, a new Netflix original series. Granted, there were only ten episodes at less than an hour long, and I probably could’ve finished it in one night if I had really set my mind to it.

Love takes place in California, and it’s set in the present day. Based on what the characters are wearing I would say it probably takes place in late Spring, Summer, or early Fall, but I don’t know because I’m not familiar with Californian weather (I’ve never left the East Coast).

The series follows two characters in their early thirties as they try to navigate their lives post breakup. They meet each other at the end of the first episode, and develop a very off kilter, odd friendship. And honestly, it’s the greatest thing ever.

The pair that become unlikely friends are Mickey and Gus. Mickey works at a radio station, and she lives with a lovely girl named Bertie. Gus works as a tutor on a movie set, and no one takes him seriously. They each have a group of friends that are very interesting people, with Gus’s friends being the more nerdy type and Mickey’s being the party type.

Over the course of the first season, their friendship goes through a lot of different stages in what seems like a short amount of time, but that could’ve been because I watched it in like three days. Mickey obviously doesn’t really know what she wants from life, and Gus knows what he wants, but he doesn’t know how to get from here to there. With the help of her friends, as well as Gus and Bertie, Mickey realizes that she has a problem that she is in desperate need of help with, and begins taking the necessary steps to get the help she needs. The season has a very ambiguous ending, I think, but not an awful one.I’m just upset I have to wait another year to see the next season haha.

So, I absolutely loved this show. I’m only 21, but I feel like this accurately captures what it’s like to be young and not have any idea what the hell you’re doing. I think it also is very accurate in how it portrays what it’s like to put yourself back together after a relationship ends, and how meeting new people or reconnecting with people you knew before can make the healing process so much easier. Especially if they’re going through the same thing, because then they know how it feels.

Love also doesn’t make love look like some great fairytale, which is great because it isn’t. This show isn’t like a romantic comedy you see on the big screen. It’s a romantic comedy, yes, but not like that. This show is more… real. Love shows that finding your person isn’t just going to automatically make things fall into place. You might still deal with addiction, and you might lose your job, and you might have a sucky roommate. Falling in love won’t fix that. And I think that’s one thing I really love about this show.

I definitely recommend this to anyone looking to find something new to watch.

Music Challenge Days Six Through Ten

Welcome back to my music challenge!

Day Six

  • What’s a song that reminds you of somewhere?

Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz takes me back to Wilkesboro, driving on the way to Boone with Aj, Eli, and Rylee. One of the most interesting road trips I’ve ever been on.

  • What song do you play when you’re feeling angry?

Since high school, my favorite song to listen to when I’m angry has been Scream Aim Fire by Bullet for my Valentine.

Day Seven

  • What’s a song that reminds you of an event?

An event? Well, Canon in D reminds me of my best friend, Sierra’s wedding.

  • What’s a song you hate?

There are a lot of songs out there that I really don’t like, so I don’t really know what to put here. I think I’ll probably go with Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye.

Day Eight

  • What’s a song that you can dance to?

I’ve  been taking dance classes for nineteen years, so I’ve danced to a lot of songs. But one that always makes me just want to start dancing is Danza Kuduro by Don Omar. It’s such a good song.

  • What’s a song that’s a guilty pleasure?

I don’t have many guilty pleasures anymore. Because I don’t want to be ashamed of the things I like. However, I’ve always considered Maroon 5 to be my guilty pleasure band, so probably Sugar.

Day Nine

  • What’s a song that makes you want to kick some ass?

Salty Dog by Flogging Molly, definitely. I’m Irish, okay? It makes me pumped and probably because I got my ass kicked in a pit to this song and I want revenge (like I could do any real damage to anyone in a pit).

  • What’s the earliest song you can remember from your childhood?

Oh god, I made my parents hate The Spice Girls because of their song Wannabe. I was like… three, and  I’m pretty sure we broke more than one cassette tape trying to appease me while I was in the car.

Day Ten

  • What’s a song that  makes you feel empowered?

Empowered? I’m not exactly sure. I feel like I have more than one song for this. But I think I’m gonna go with

  • For you, what song defines the 70’s?

The song to me that defines the 70’s is Black Dog by Led Zeppelin. Or Don’t Look Back by Boston. Or Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. This is a hard question. But mostly Led Zeppelin I think.

Music Challenges

This is just something I saw online that sounded like fun. I know there are a few different ones out there, so I’m gonna kinda combine a few of them. Most of them are 30 days, but I’m gonna spread it out over time. I think I’m going to post them every five days to break it up some. There’s two challenges I’m going to be combining, I think. Maybe three. Without further ado, here’s Day One.

Day One

  • What is your favorite song (right now)?

Well, that’s a really hard question to answer because I like so many. I would probably have to say my favorite song right now is Inside Out by Eve 6.

  • What is a song you would like played at your funeral?

This is a really grim question, but not one that I can’t answer. I think everyone gives a little bit of thought to things like this. I don’t really want my funeral to be sad, so I kinda want a mix of happy and songs about moving on played. As a joke I think I would like Highway to Hell by AC/DC played. I’d also like Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow played. On a more serious note, I want the song Asleep by The Smiths played. It’s a beautiful song.

Day Two

  • What song was number one when you were born?

I’m not sure why I found this so funny, but the song that was at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 the day I was born was I’ll Make Love to You by Boyz II Men.

  • What is a song you find incredibly beautiful?

I find so many songs beautiful for so many different reasons, but I absolutely love Daniela Andrade’s cover of La Vie En Rose. Daniela Andrade has such a beautiful voice,  and this is such a beautiful song. In my opinion, no one sings it better than she does. The first time I heard this song I got chills.

Day Three

  • What’s a song you would like people to listen to and think of you?

Well, this is an incredibly hard question. I don’t know that I would want a specific song to remind people of me. Or, I have songs that I would like for certain people to associate with me. I’m not sure how to answer this. The song that I feel like resonates with me the most right now is Bitch by Meredith Brooks, so I guess that.

  • What song has the highest play count on your iTunes?

The song that has been played the most on my iTunes account on my laptop is this cover of The Maker by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds. It’s a song I danced to back in high school and I really liked it a lot.

Day Four

  • What’s a song that explains your first kiss?

This is oddly specific. My first kiss was pretty uneventful. And with an absolute jerk, but you live and you learn. I don’t really think I have a specific song that reminds me of that event, because it isn’t something I think about often. A song that usually reminds me of that person/relationship is She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd, because I just have no use for that person anymore.

  • What song do you play when you’re feeling happy?

When I’m happy I like to listen to a lot of really upbeat music. Or music that gives me a good laugh. And as much as I love Ed Sheeran, his cover of Trap Queen never gets old. It is what I’m listening to now actually.

Day Five

  • What is a song that makes you turn up the volume on you radio?

There are a lot of these actually. One that always makes me turn up the radio is Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crue.

  • What is a song that makes you sad?

There a quite a few songs that make me really sad, but the best example of this is Give Me A Sign by Breaking Benjamin. I listened to this song on repeat for weeks after my friend Dillon died, so it’s hard for me to listen to it all anymore,  even though I love the song a lot.

Stay tuned for more.

Tackling First Dates

So, you’re about to go on a first date. It might be your first date with someone new that you’re interested in, or just your first date in general. I just recently went on a first date with a guy that was really cool, and I will write about that at a later time.

Anyway, here we go:

Tackling First Dates

  • I know that no matter what I tell you, you’re going to be nervous about your first date. Hopefully, the stupidly excited, jittery kind of nervous, rather than the dreadful kind of nervous. But it’s always a bit easier to try to keep those butterflies contained.
  • Pick out what you’re going to wear beforehand. It’s nice to be surprised by what you’re going to be doing, but it never hurts to ask if it’s okay to wear something, whether that’s a dress and heels, or a a hoodie and jeans. At least that’ll give you an idea of something that’s appropriate, and you won’t have to stress ten minutes before you’re about to leave about what you’re wearing.
  • Don’t worry about the things that could go wrong. Yeah, you could spill wine on your white dress, or you could trip trying to get out of the car, but if you stress about that happening, you’ll be so self conscious that’ll you’ll be more likely to do it, and your date will also notice how worried you are.
  • If you aren’t comfortable with physical contact on the first date, don’t do it. Your date will understand. Maybe you feel like you don’t know them well enough to hold their hand, or hug them, or kiss them. Maybe you’re not confident enough for that. And that’s totally okay, stay in your comfort zone.
  • On the flipside, if you are comfortable with physical contact on the first date, then go for it, presuming your date has consented as well. There is no real rulebook for first dates. If you and your date are comfortable with it, you could kiss, hug, hold hands, or even have sex on the first date. In this day and age, none of that is unusual, and as long as you’re comfortable with it and want it (and so does your date), there isn’t any reason why you shouldn’t.
  • Don’t stress about running about things to talk about. Conversation should come very naturally, but it won’t if you’re nervous. Don’t be afraid to ask your date questions about themselves, like of their interests or family. It’s an easy way to keep the conversation going, especially if you have common ground to go off of.
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY: Be yourself and have fun. You’re going out on a date because your date wants to get to know you, not some false persona. And if a relationship were to come of it, you want them to like the real you, rather than trying to mold yourself into someone you think they would like. On the reversal, if nothing comes of it and you just have a good time, then at least you know the reason you aren’t starting a relationship is because you weren’t being yourself.

So, that’s some of my not-so-expert advice, but I hope it helps!

Enjoy your first dates. 🙂

Updates and Upcoming Things

So- I’m going to apologize again for how little I’ve been posting to this blog. I have so many things I’ve planned for this blog, and it seems like I really suck at getting them done. Anyway.

So coming up in April, I’m doing a Music Challenge series. If that goes well, I may do a Book Challenge series later in the year. So I hope that goes well, and that my readers (if there are any anymore), will enjoy that.

I also have a few more posts already lined up, and I hope to start a few more. I’d like to get back to doing book reviews, maybe on more of a monthly scale than a weekly one.

I have so many exciting things going on in my life right now, and I can’t wait to post about them! I’m not going to just yet, but I will when the time is right. Those posts I have to write up, and for some things it’s just really hard for me to find the right words for how I feel.

So thank you for bearing with me while I try to get my schedule for this blog more figured out.
